St James’s Hospital |

Intensive Care Units |
| Size: |
200 sq metres |
Requirement:
Roan Building Systems were awarded the design
& build contract for the construction of
six single bedroom ICU/ HDU’s, Ancillary
Accommodation & Support Facilities. As main
contractor Roan Building Systems were also responsible
for PSCS & PSDP.
This complex project was phased over four stages
to minimize disruption to critical hospital
areas.
|
Solution:
Phase 1: The construction of two
new single ICU bedrooms within the hospital Intensive
Care Ward, fully compliant with Health Building Note
(H.B.N) 57 Infection control is a critical issue when
working in a live hospital environment, all site personnel
were required to adhere to Roan Building Systems strict
infection control policy.
Phase 2: Design & build of a
new 200sq mtr Anaesthetists Department annexed to
the existing Intensive Care Ward. This new modular
building was constructed off-site & craned into
position on the roof of existing hospital. The lift
& installation was completed in one day &
was clad to blend in seamlessly with the main hospital.
As infection control measure the link between the
new department & the main Intensive Care Ward
corridor was not broken through until the modular
building was complete.
Phase 3: Design & build of a
new 500sq mtr 3 storey modular building to house the
following:Ground Floor: Plant Room c/w UPS & air
systems for new ICUs, Loading Bay c/w lift, Female
& Male Changing Facilities First Floor: Clinical
Store, Consultant Rooms, Seminar Room, Pantry &
link to main Intensive Care Ward corridor.Second Floor:
Triage, Consultant Rooms, Restrooms & Kitchenette.
This new modular building was constructed off-site
& craned into position in an internal hospital
courtyard. The lift & installation was completed
in one day & was clad to blend in seamlessly with
the main hospital. As infection control measure the
link between the new department & the main Intensive
Care Ward corridor was not broken through until the
modular building was complete.
Phase 4: Once the two modular buildings
were operational, Roan Building Systems then commenced
work on the construction of four new single ICU bedrooms
within the hospital Intensive Care Ward. Infection
control is a critical issue when working in a live
hospital environment, all site personnel were required
to adhere to Roan Building Systems strict infection
control policy.
Innovative Solutions: The complete
off-site fitout of the Anaesthetists Department, the
courtyard building & two new plant rooms c/w UPS
& air systems for new ICUs expedited the programme
time greatly. The off-site construction of these buildings
also greatly reduced the health & safety risk:
- Significantly reduces the number of vehicle movements
on site
- Greatly reduced the threat of aspergillious by reducing
the onsite construction element
- Reduced working at height requirements
